The Bachelor of Design in Interior Architecture helps students to re-imagine interior environments and public spaces in local and global contexts. With a strong emphasis on people's experiences of spatial design, this degree equips students with the critical skills required to interrogate and transgress the traditional boundaries of commercial interior design.

Students learn to engage with public and urban spaces alongside internal environments. Contemporary societies and city environments are changing rapidly, and this course promotes the ability to adapt to this change and shape the way people experience interior and public spaces.

Through a strong emphasis on practice and research, students develop the ability to think conceptually and understand the complex contexts in which they are designing. Through intensive collaborative design studios, students work to develop, discuss and debate ideas as they would in industry. With skills in analogue and digital design and fabrication, they are able to tackle real-world projects in the studios as well as through competitions with stakeholders such as the Art Gallery of NSW, Object Gallery, the City of Sydney and Zumtobel Lighting.

International connections and focus encourage recognition of UTS graduates abroad. UTS academics lead yearly international design studios in cities such as Berlin, Hong Kong, Athens, Prague and Venice. International guest lectures and workshops, as well as a wide range of exchange opportunities, enrich students' learning and expose them to different cultures of design.

Course aims

Through their study, students develop spatial intelligence and excellence in design practice. The program fosters a creative and explorative attitude towards the design process, underpinned by reflective and critical engagement. Students generate a cohesive design approach where research and practice are consolidated in design outcomes.

Innovation and Transdisciplinary program

Transdisciplinarity and Innovation at UTS

All UTS students have the opportunity to develop distinctive capabilities around transdisciplinary thinking and innovation through the TD School. Transdisciplinary education at UTS brings together great minds from different disciplines to explore ideas that improve the way we live and work in the world. These offerings are unique to UTS and directly translate to many existing and emerging roles and careers.

Diploma in Innovation

The Diploma in Innovation (C20060) teaches innovation, supports personal transformation and provides the hard skills needed to support the inventors and inventions of the future. Students come out of the Diploma in Innovation, with the hard skills to create and support sectoral and societal transformation. Graduates are able to fluently integrate ideas, across professional disciplines and are inventors of the future.

All UTS undergraduate students (with the exception of students concurrently enrolled in the Bachelor of Creative Intelligence and Innovation) can apply for the Diploma in Innovation upon admission in their chosen undergraduate degree. It is a complete degree program that runs in parallel to any undergraduate degree. The course is offered on a three-year, part-time basis, with subjects running in 3-week long intensive blocks in July, December and February sessions. Transdisciplinary electives program

Transdisciplinary electives broaden students' horizons and supercharge their problem-solving skills, helping them to learn outside, beyond and across their degrees. In 2022, students enrolled in an undergraduate course that includes electives can choose to take a transdisciplinary subject (with the exception of students concurrently enrolled in the Bachelor of Creative Intelligence and Innovation). From 2023, all students enrolled in most undergraduate courses will complete a transdisciplinary subject as part of their course of study. Olivia Savio-Matev: Interior and Spatial Design Student

The way that interior and spatial design at UTS differs from other interior decorating and interior architecture degrees at other universities is in the way that it relates to people, to space, and to the city in general. We definitely don't deal with decorating with cushions or colour samples, but much more so with how people seek to use space and how through spatial design you can improve the way that people live to a degree.

In my degree its not a degree that is kind-of singular, its something that requires a lot of engagement and a huge amount of dedication by not only the students but to the practitioners and tutors as well.

So I think that having people who work in industry to inspire you but also to guide you through the design process and to make you into the designer you are is kind-of this huge opportunity that I'm not sure other design schools really get. So I think in my degree I've been really lucky with the people that I've met along the way and also the students that have been with me not only for the first three years of the degree but over the last year as well.

So its kind-of a multi layered approach to design and thinking, and its not something thats limiting, and I think that kind-of broadens people's ability to go out and go into different kinds of design practice.

Local student

All students at UTS pay tuition fees to contribute towards the cost of their studies.

In 2022 all offers made to domestic undergraduate students will be for Commonwealth Supported Places (CSP), which means that the Australian government makes a substantial contribution towards the cost of your education, and you pay the balance through student contributions.

The amount you pay depends on your area of study and the number of credit points (cp) in which you enrol. At UTS 48 credit points is considered to be one Equivalent Full Time Study Load (EFTSL).

The table to the right shows the amount a student can expect to pay for one year of full-time study (1.0 EFTSL).

Students can choose to pay their student contribution upfront, or if eligible, can defer their fees through HECS-HELP.

In addition to tuition fees, students are required to pay a Services and Amenities Fee (SSAF). The purchase of textbooks and other course materials may also result in additional cost.

You can calculate your student contribution as a percentage of the amounts shown on the table. Fee rates are divided into four bands covering broad discipline areas.  It is important to note that a particular subject within a course may fall within a different band.

For example, if you are enrolled in a 6 credit point Architecture subject, your contribution would be 6/48 x $8,021 = $1,002.

Tuition fees must be paid in advance each session and are subject to annual increase. Fees for future year(s) published in fees search, whilst unlikely to change, are estimates only. UTS makes every effort to provide up to date future year(s) fee estimates and to limit any changes, however, UTS reserves the right to vary fees for future year(s) at any time.

For this course, the cost per credit point for 2022 is $877. The total credit points are 144.

Course duration

The course is offered on a three-year, full-time basis. There are generally up to 20 contact hours a week. Lectures and studios are on campus during the teaching period.

Admission requirements

Applicants must have completed an Australian Year 12 qualification, Australian Qualifications Framework Diploma, or equivalent Australian or overseas qualification at the required level.

UTS: Design, Architecture and Building may consider applications based on the results of the Special Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT) if students lack academic qualifications but have extensive professional experience. The STAT is conducted through the Universities Admissions Centre.

Students must refer to the inherent requirements for all degrees offered by Design and Architecture in the Faculty of Design, Architecture and Building.

The English proficiency requirement for international students or local applicants with international qualifications is: Academic IELTS: 6.5 overall with a writing score of 6.0; or TOEFL: paper based: 550-583 overall with TWE of 4.5, internet based: 79-93 overall with a writing score of 21; or AE5: Pass; or PTE: 58-64; or CAE: 176-184.

International students

Visa requirement: To obtain a student visa to study in Australia, international students must enrol full time and on campus. Australian student visa regulations also require international students studying on student visas to complete the course within the standard full-time duration. Students can extend their courses only in exceptional circumstances.
